The Artistry of Méthode Champenoise
It is true that champagne can only be made in the Champagne region of France, from grapes only grown there. Strict guidelines and regulations are in place to dictate yields and methods of production; there are however, other sparkling wines made in many places around the world. For instance, French sparkling wine produced outside the Champagne region is known as Mousseux; in Italy, the word for sparkling is Spumante, in Germany, it is called Sekt and Cava is the term used in Spain for sparkling wines. Méthode Traditionnelle and Méthode Classique are other terms for Méthode Champenoise, and may be used on those bottle fermented sparkling wines made anywhere outside of the Champagne region, especially within the European Union.
